Canvas and materials

Canvas and leather are at the heart of L/UNIFORM creations. Designed for everyday use, our materials combine functionality, durability, and aesthetic precision.

CANVAS

cotton and linen

Natural quadrille canvas

Woven exclusively for L/UNIFORM in Italy, this canvas combines cotton (63%) and linen (37%), to achieve a balance between strength, lightness and suppleness. Its plain weave, known for its stability and durability, creates a canvas with no right or wrong side.

After weaving, the canvas is washed and shorn to obtain an almost smooth surface. It is then treated with a water-repellent treatment, before being coated on both sides to ease care while preserving a matte appearance.

Undyed, the canvas retains its natural beige color, faithful to the authenticity of the material.

On the black, navy, and brown quadrille canvases, the linen yarn is dyed, creating the distinctive graphic contrast of this canvas.

100% cotton

Colored canvas

Made in France exclusively for L/UNIFORM, this 100% cotton canvas is woven in plain weave, known for its stability and durability, with no right or wrong side.

After weaving, the canvas is washed and shorn to achieve an almost smooth surface. It is then dyed through, in red, yellow, white, navy, or black. A water-repellent treatment is applied, followed by a coating on the reverse side only, preserving the brightness of the color on the outer face. This coating facilitates care while maintaining the natural appearance of the material.

100% cotton

Khaki and dune canvases

Made in France from carded fibers that have not been chemically treated, this 100% cotton canvas is known for its stability and durability. Long used by the military, the plain weave in which it is constructed is particularly dense, giving the fabric excellent resistance to deformation and tearing.

This density makes through-dyeing particularly complex: the color does not always penetrate the fiber entirely and may reveal small lighter threads during production or with use. These variations are inherent to the material and reflect its authenticity.

Among the many shades of khaki, L/UNIFORM selected the US 1945 color, originally developed in 1945 for military tarps and tents.

The Dune canvas shares the same technical and structural characteristics, in a lighter shade.

The canvases are then treated with a water-repellent treatment, followed by a coating applied to the reverse to preserve the vibrancy of the color on the outer face. This coating also facilitates maintenance while maintaining the material’s natural appearance.

LEATHER

Full-grain calfskin

Selected for its quality and lasting structure, the full-grain calfskin used by L/UNIFORM is a milled calf leather of Catalan origin. Supple while remaining structured, it is valued for its sturdiness and natural resistance, suited to everyday use.

Its grain, marked by a natural depth, develops a patina over time, revealing a living material that evolves with use while preserving its character and comfort.

Sawn lambskin

Derived from lamb hides, sawn lambskin is distinguished by its velvety touch and matte finish. Carefully worked at the surface; it offers soft, lightweight, and refined material.

It is used for the interior of L/UNIFORM’s small leather goods, where it brings comfort and subtlety in contact.

HARDWARE

Hardware

Metal components are selected for their functionality and understated design.

The zippers are manufactured in Switzerland, while the remaining hardware elements are produced in Italy or Spain.

Pieces are finished in gold. A palladium finish can be made on request through the Bespoke service.

TESTS & REQUIREMENTS

To ensure the durability, safety, and long-term performance of its materials, L/UNIFORM submits all components to laboratory testing.

These tests verify that the materials meet our physico-chemical specifications and comply with European REACH and POP regulations, which govern the use of chemical substances to protect human health and the environment.

They are complemented by usage tests that reproduce the constraints of everyday use.

The martindale test

This test evaluates the resistance of fabric and leather to wear caused by friction.

The materials are subjected to repeated rubbing cycles using a worsted wool disc applied under pressure.

L/UNIFORM canvases must withstand 30,000 cycles in the Martindale test (ISO 12947-2), demonstrating very high abrasion resistance and the ability to endure intensive daily use.

The crockmeter test

The Crockmeter test evaluates color fastness on both canvas and leather, under dry and wet conditions.

A sample of canvas or leather is rubbed with a standardized white cotton pad using a controlled motion and pressure. The test is first carried out dry, then repeated with a slightly dampened cotton pad.

After a defined number of rubbing cycles, the sample is examined to assess any potential color transfer or migration.

To be approved, the canvases must achieve a minimum rating of 4/5 in dry conditions and 3/5 in wet conditions in the Crockmeter test (ISO 105-X12), ensuring good color stability under intensive use conditions.

These tests ensure materials suited to everyday use, combining durability, functionality, and aesthetic standards.

Additional tests

Our leathers are also subjected to demanding mechanical resistance tests, including tear strength, tensile strength, and flex resistance under both dry and wet conditions.

Hardware tests

Each metal component undergoes several controls and tests, including checks on the adhesion of the finish.
