Our Materials

Canvas is a foundation of L/Uniform, a manufacture founded on the desire to make simple and beautiful, useful and solid. Canvas declines everyday bags in ultra-functional versions and comes in different shades.

The natural grid canvas

Material: cotton and linen

In order to ensure strength, lightness and flexibility, the woven canvas made in Italy combines two natural materials: cotton in the warp (63%) and linen in the weft (37%). L/Uniform has chosen a plain weave: this is the weave, that is to say the way in which the threads intertwine, the most stable and the most resistant and which has neither back nor front. This canvas is woven exclusively for L/Uniform. After weaving, the canvas is washed then shaved - in order to obtain an almost smooth surface. An initial treatment at the core immerses it in a bath of fluorinated resin, giving it anti-stain, waterproof and water-repellent properties. The canvas is then coated on each side, to facilitate its maintenance, while preserving its matte appearance. Without dye, the beige woven canvas retains its natural and authentic color.

The colored canvas

Material: 100% cotton

For this 100% cotton canvas made in France, L/Uniform has chosen a plain weave: this is the weave, that is to say the way in which the threads intertwine, the most stable and the most resistant and which has neither back nor front. This canvas is woven exclusively for L/Uniform. After weaving, the canvas is washed then shaved - in order to obtain an almost smooth surface - then dyed to the core in red, navy blue and black. An initial treatment to the core immerses it in a bath of fluorinated resin, giving it stain-resistant, waterproof and water-repellent properties. The canvas is then coated on the back only, to preserve its original appearance while facilitating its maintenance and resistance over time.

The khaki canvas

Material: 100% cotton

Still used today by the army for its many qualities, this 100% cotton canvas made in France is made from carded fibers that have not received any chemical treatment. Chosen for their robustness, these fibers are then woven in plain weave, in a very dense weave: The result is a canvas that resists deformation and tearing. This canvas density explains the complexity of producing a core dye: Due to the configuration of the canvas, the dye does not penetrate the inside of the fabric, and can reveal small white threads during manufacture or use. For us, this is a guarantee of authenticity. Among the hundred shades of khaki, L/UNIFORM has chosen the US 1945 color, launched in 1945 for the manufacture of tarpaulins and military tent canvases. But while the military coats this raw canvas with a paraffin-based treatment to make it waterproof and rigid, L/UNIFORM applies specific treatments designed for bags and luggage.
